Challenge
Built wanted to invest in the development of future leaders, particularly emerging female talent, by offering structured support beyond traditional mentoring. While these individuals were technically strong, many lacked the confidence, networks, or visibility to take the next step. The organisation needed a program that would promote advocacy, self-belief, and access to senior leaders.
Approach
Built partnered with Cultivate to deliver the sponsorship program to five sponsor-sponsee pairs across Australia. Over 14 self-paced modules, participants engaged in sponsor-led conversations, shadowing, leadership reflection, and peer learning. A key feature: “Day in the Life” exchanges, was designed to build empathy and cross-level understanding. Program momentum was supported through three facilitated workshops over a seven-month period
Solution
The program created space for visibility, honesty, and strategic connection. Sponsees reported feeling seen and supported, especially when their sponsors were engaged and intentional. Sponsors gained a deeper appreciation of their influence and the difference between mentoring and true sponsorship. Together, pairs strengthened confidence, cross-functional awareness, and a shared language of leadership across the business
Experience
Participants shared rich feedback, particularly on the value of shadowing and intentional time for reflection. Sponsees spoke of gaining career clarity, feeling more valued, and breaking through imposter syndrome. Sponsors reflected on legacy, listening, and their role in championing underrepresented talent. While time pressures affected some completion rates, those who stayed engaged experienced meaningful growth.
